The Monsoon Bride is off to print

The story so far ….

Last September (2010) my unpublished manuscript, Winsome of Rangoon, was shortlisted in the Victorian Premier Literary awards.

In December, Mandy Brett, Senior Editor at Text, read the manuscript and emailed me to let me know she liked the book.  I happen to be halfway across the world visiting family in Canada.  Champagne all round and nails bitten to the quick as I hope Text like it enough to acquire the book.

Back in Australia, I meet Mandy (lovely, funny and v. astute) and Text buy the novel (more champagne).

So, for the past six months, Mandy and I have been working on the book, sharpening certain characters, playing with background and foreground, talking (in particular) about the way sexual and racial conflicts play out.

We talk about the title (I wrote a piece about this for the Wheeler Centre website).  We change the title to The Monsoon Bride.

Last Friday (July 15th) the novel went to print.

Next post – when the printed copies come in.
