This past week has been full of conversations with fellow writers about the uncertainty of writing; about where the pleasure of it lies, of how to deal with agents, critics, publishers, editors, radio interviewers, festival organizers, booksellers and people you meet over dinner who want to know what you ‘do’. About what it is exactly that readers (or anybody who isn’t a writer) wants from us. About why we continue, despite it all.
Yes, it was a week in which we came over all rueful. So, I thought I’d put this observation out there. When things get really crappy or really good, this is what I tell myself. It’s a bit of a mantra….
Writing is humiliation and affirmation in turn. If these two are in balance, you are doing okay.
